Ireland’s Maritime Heritage Museum

The National Maritime Museum of Ireland in Dún Laoghaire is a captivating hands-on museum that highlights the country’s rich maritime history.

Located in the former Mariners’ Church built in 1837, the museum opened in 1978 and showcases Ireland’s connection to the sea from early days to the present.

The museum’s exhibits feature an extensive collection of ship models, nautical instruments, engines, and maritime memorabilia that tell stories of Irish sailors, explorers, and shipbuilders.

Visitors can explore the impressive 10-tonne revolving Baily Lighthouse Optic, as well as exhibits on the Titanic, Royal Navy prisoners, and maritime war history.

Interactive displays like the electrified steam engine and sailor's knots workshops engage visitors of all ages, making it a family-friendly destination.

The museum includes a research library for deep dives into maritime topics and a shop with marine-themed products.

Operated mainly by volunteers, the museum serves as a guardian of Ireland’s seafaring legacy, preserving and celebrating the often overlooked but crucial role of the sea in shaping the nation’s culture and economy.
